  Infected blood or body fluids transmit infection through transfusions, shared needles, or sexual intercourse, or from mother to fetus. Since 1992, screening for HCV has caused transfusion-related cases of HCV to drop to less than 1 per million units of blood. Up to 20% of people with hepatitis C have no known risk factor beyond sexual intercourse.
