What causes myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases?

The causes of myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases are not fully understood. Normally, the production of blood cells in the bone marrow is tightly regulated. Stem cells may develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, or megakaryocytes. Megakaryocytes form platelets, which prevent small cuts from bleeding excessively. Mutations of genes involved in the formation of blood cells can lead to abnormalities in blood cell production and development, resulting in myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative disease.
