Heartburn is the reflux of stomach acid in the esophagus, and can lead to a variety of dangerous medical conditions.

Heartburn is caused by stomach acid entering the esophagus. Unlike the lining of stomach, the lining of esophagus is not protected against acid, so long-term exposure can cause damage. This may lead to changes in the lining that may eventually warrant close observation by a specialist due to concern for developing cancer in the affected area.
