What is an abnormal heart murmur?

An abnormal, or pathologic, heart murmur is heard in infants and children who have an abnormal structure in the heart or vessels of the lungs or body. They can be caused by narrow or leaky valves, some holes in the walls between the heart chambers, narrowed arteries in the lungs or body, or other areas that keep blood from flowing smoothly out of the heart.
