How do I help an unconscious adult in cardiac arrest?

If you find someone who is unconscious and does not respond do the following things:

1. Try to remain calm and call 911 tell them the situation and your location, stay on the line or provide them with your phone number so they can locate you if you become disconnected

2. If you are in a public location ask someone to locate an automated external defibrillator (AED)

3. Stay with the person and begin CPR immediately and continue until someone arrives with the AED, or emergency personnel arrives

4. If there is an AED use it immediately and follow the commands on the AED until emergency personnel arrives

  1. CHECK the scene and the injured or ill person.
  2. CALL 9-1-1 or the local emergency number. 
  3. CHECK for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. 
  4. Quickly CHECK for severe bleeding.
  5. If the person is not breathing, give CARE by beginning CPR.
