The duration of cardiovascular infection is determined by the severity of the infection. If the infection is discovered quickly, aggressive medical intervention with antibiotics will be needed for two to eight weeks. If treatment is delayed, the infection is more difficult to eradicate, and treatment will take longer. Surgery along with a recovery period may be needed if the heart has been damaged. If no treatment is given, or if treatment is delayed too long, cardiovascular infection is fatal.
