What are the treatment options for shock?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

The first treatment for shock is to get blood flowing into the heart. This may be done by elevating the feet, if no spinal cord injury is suspected. Any internal or external bleeding should be stopped as soon as possible. A medical professional may administer oxygen, intravenous fluids, a blood transfusion, or any drugs needed to treat the cause of low blood pressure. Drugs may be needed to constrict blood vessels, increase the heart rate, or reduce blood clots. In some cases, surgery may be required to repair the heart.
