What is the goal of a cardiac rehab program?

After a cardiac event, it can be challenging to know when and how to get back to normal activities. In this video, professionals at Trident Medical Center explain how a cardiac rehabilitation program helps.
The goal is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, another cardiac event or death. Evidence suggests that improving the plasma lipid and lipoprotein profile with diet, exercise and drug therapy benefits patients. To achieve these benefits, the client will need to follow a program that will include counseling so they can understand and manage the disease process. This would start with an exercise program, nutritional counseling and  helping the patient modify risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes. The long-term success of any secondary prevention program is directly related to patient compliance.  With the cardio program this means it will have to be safe but it also has to be motivating.  As soon as the patient is able, they should begin doing activities that will not only stress the heart and cardiovascular system but are also fun. The main goal is to get the patient back to doing the activities they were doing prior to their cardiac issues which will not only help improve their fitness but also their mental state, which is just as important.
