Does hearing impairment affect children differently than adults?

The main issue that needs to be considered with children who have hearing impairment is the development of communication skills. Adults and older children who acquire hearing loss have already learned language skills. The first five years of life are considered the critical years for learning language, so if a child cannot hear what is going on, learn new words, and practice communication, his or her development may be delayed. Hearing aids are recommended along with an accommodating and supportive learning environment and a speech therapist.
