How common is Usher syndrome?

Usher syndrome affects about four out of every 100,000 babies born in the United States. In the United States, 90-95 percent of the children will have either Type 1 or Type 2 Usher syndrome. In Type 1, the child is born deaf, has decreased vision, and balance problems. In Type 2, the child has a hearing loss, decreased vision as a teenager, and no balance problems.
