Can hearing damage be cured?

If a ruptured eardrum causes hearing damage, most of the time the damage is cured as the eardrum heals itself over the course of weeks or months. The hearing loss that accompanies a ruptured eardrum tends to be temporary and resolves once the eardrum heals. Hearing damage that is caused by prolonged exposure to noise or by short-term but sudden loud noises (gunshots, explosions) usually does not have a cure. The damage caused by sudden noises may lead to immediate and permanent hearing loss, although the loss may be partial and only in one ear. Damage caused by long-term exposure to noise usually occurs gradually. It too often results in partial hearing loss but usually in both ears. Hearing damage from ototoxic drugs can sometimes be reversed if the drugs can be stopped.
