If you have freckles, there is a good chance that one of your parents has or had them, too. This common skin trait is inherited. Freckles are small darkened spots that can occur on skin that is exposed to the sun. They are more common in people with fair skin and light or red hair. Freckles are harmless. If you avoid sunlight, they can fade.
