Is it safe to use toothpaste containing triclosan?

It is safe to use toothpaste containing triclosan. Triclosan is a substance added to consumer products such as toothpaste and hand sanitizer to combat germs caused by bacteria. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that it is not harmful and has approved its use in toothpaste. Studies show that triclosan in toothpaste slows the growth of plaque and mild gum swelling. Be aware that the FDA is reviewing triclosan because of recent concerns that long-time overuse of germ-fighting ingredients such as triclosan may create new strains of bacteria or "super germs" that are stronger than the body's natural defense system. Some doctors fear such new forms of bacteria could also be resistant to current antibiotic medications used to fight a variety of infections.
