What's the best way to make lifestyle changes?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Most experts agree that making small, gradual changes is the best way to adopt healthier lifestyle habits. For example, if you haven't exercised for years, leaping off the sofa and trying to jog 5 miles a day is probably a setup for failure. There's a very good chance that you won't be able to achieve such an ambitious goal, which may cause you to become discouraged and give up. Pushing yourself too hard makes you more likely to injure yourself, too. A better idea would be to take a 15-minute walk every day, gradually adding time and increasing your pace. Talk to your doctor before embarking on a new exercise plan or diet plan, and ask his or her advice on establishing realistic, achievable goals.
