What can I change to make my lifestyle healthier?

Try slowly adding some exercise into your life. Start small. For example, start by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking around a block to your office versus walking directly to your office from your car.

As a couple of weeks pass, find some activity you love and set an exercise goal for yourself. For example, I want to start walking 20 minutes a day for two days. Try finding others who might want to get healthier (family, friends or co-workers) and invite them along. You could even hold a meeting while walking or jogging.

It's also great to know the pro's of exercise because there are many pro's to exercise. Exercise helps keep you healthy and strong in body, mind and spirit. Exercise also helps diminish and alleviate existing health conditions. Exercise allows people to sleep better. Its effective for depression, anxiety and helps alter moods to positive levels. Physical activity provide biochemical changes in the brain increasing the concentration of positive neurochemicals such as endorphins and serotonin. Exercise is also positively associated with changes in brain wave activity allowing for a more calm mental state.

A healthier lifestyle consists of a variety of strategies, such as healthier eating, exercise and physical activity, getting adequate sleep, reducing stress and spiritual fulfillment. However, it's important to remember that no two people are the same, and you should tailor whatever strategies you use to your own life and goals.

A healthier body, mind and spirit are something many people strive to reach. However, the pressures of daily life can make it difficult to achieve. Trying to do it all—maintain a successful career, sustain stable relationships, raise children, care for aging parents—can take a serious toll on your physical and emotional health. Therefore, it's important that you take the time and make the effort to focus on yourself without feelings of guilt.

A lifestyle improvement program should always include getting annual physicals and tests from a primary care doctor. To find a primary care doctor, just visit your insurance carrier’s website, look for the “find a doctor” area and follow the instructions.

To begin to change your lifestyle, think about your current eating and activity habits. What foods do you buy? How active are you? Try to keep honest food records for a few days to get a true picture of what you eat. Based on your current habits, start with a few changes that are easy to tackle. Pick some changes that you want to do the most, and that will make the biggest impact. Perhaps choose one change in your eating habits and another in activity. Remember; don't try to change everything at once.

For example, maybe you tend to eat a bowl of ice cream every night while you watch TV. Can you switch that ice cream to a healthier snack? Maybe fruit or a small bowl of cereal? Or just a smaller portion of ice cream. And can you take 15 minute break from the TV and go for a walk?
