What are some healthy family meals?

Here are some healthy family meal ideas:
  • Baked potato with fat-free cottage cheese and vegetables
  • Bean burritos, using black beans, vegetarian or fat-free refried beans
  • Casserole with chicken, vegetables, and rice
  • Chili and cornbread
  • Enchiladas with vegetables and chicken
  • Omelets with vegetables and low-fat cheese
  • Grilled salmon and wild rice
  • Macaroni and cheese, without the butter and using skim milk
  • Pizza topped with vegetables and mozzarella cheese
  • Roasted vegetables (in olive oil) served on brown rice
  • Salad tossed with tuna or chicken
  • Soups that are broth-based or made with low-fat milk
  • Spaghetti with tomato sauce and extra vegetables
  • Stir-fry with chicken and vegetables over brown rice
  • Tuna or chicken salad sandwich on whole wheat
  • Pancakes or waffles (whole wheat) with fruit and light yogurt
  • Hummus and whole-wheat pitas
  • Subs or wraps with vegetables and lean meats

Any meals that incorporate foods from each of the five food groups would be a considered healthy. This would include fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, lean protein and whole grains. An example of this would be: chicken breast on whole grain pasta and parmesan cheese, with a side of steamed broccoli and watermelon for dessert. Preparing meals that contain a wide range of colors will help your family will get a variety of nutrients as well. Remember to check food labels and ingredient lists to avoid foods that might negatively affect your family’s health, like high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oil.
