What are the benefits of gaining weight with age?

It is important to realize that some weight gain might actually be a good thing. There appears to be an association between survival and body mass index (BMI). Data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging showed that people with a very low BMI might have the same risk of death as those who have a very high BMI. The best survival rates are seen in people who have slight increases in weight as they get older.
