Why are whole grains important in our diet?

Grains are seeds of plants and have three parts -- bran, germ and endosperm. Whole grains are grains that have their bran and germ intact and therefore provide valuable nutrients. They are important to include in our diets because they are a good source of fiber, selenium, potassium, and magnesium. They are overall more nutritious than refined grains which have their bran and germ removed during milling.
