How are environmental health hazards caused?

Some environmental health hazards are caused by industrial practices and pollution. Others are caused by the way we live. Our personal "choices" are limited by economic resources, family obligations, and the available alternatives. All the same, we do want to take precautions in and around our homes to avoid creating environmental health hazards. For example, we may choose to buy mercury-free thermometers or check our homes for radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer. We may also press for more research on poorly understood health risks and for the enforcement of regulations to keep our environment safe.
