Do insurance companies cover the cost of counseling for smoking cessation?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD

Your insurance may cover the cost of counseling for smoking cessation. Under healthcare care reform, also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or simply the Affordable Care Act, preventive health services such as smoking cessation are said to be covered. Of course, insurance companies set their own coverage policies, so check with your provider to see if smoking cessation treatment is covered under your policy.
This depends on your particular coverage. Most insurance companies do provide at least some mental health coverage, so calling the customer service number located on the back of your insurance card and speaking with the mental health provider for your plan may clarify your questions regarding the covered benefits in your particular plan.

Typically not.  They should and I think it would save them money in the long run with tobacco problems but unfortunately they typically do not cover it.

Yes and no.  You have to check with your insurance company.  Some do, some do not.  One of the most amazing revelations to me, when I started in this area, was that most insurance companies do not.  Medicare has started to in the last couple of years, and many Medicaid programs do, and now more than 15% of insurance companies, but that is still a minority.  You would think, with a return on investment of over 6 to 1, all insurance companies would, but they think you are going to leave the company, or the person you are working for, sooner than they will get their return on investment, which would take about 2 years.
