Why should I keep seeing a family doctor if I see a specialist?

Doctors that practice family medicine, or "family physicians," can work together with other medical specialists to optimize your healthcare.
Family doctors typically have a broad knowledge of medicine as well as a more comprehensive knowledge of a patient's history and family life than a specialist does. For example, your cardiologist may be the best person to treat a heart problem once you have one, but your family doctor may be able to inform your cardiologist about other health issues, such as past injuries, that are contributing to your chest pain.
Your family doctor can act as the quarterback of your healthcare, helping to inform and direct your medical team of experts.
