Three states, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington, have specific laws that allow for legal assisted suicide. Montana has allowed legally assisted suicide through court ruling. Thirty-nine states specifically prohibit assisted suicide. Common law prohibits assisted suicide in three states and the District of Columbia, but four states have no laws regarding assisted suicide. In most of the United States, and in many countries, passive forms of euthanasia, like refusing treatment or withholding life-saving treatments, is legal if voluntarily chosen by the person determined to be terminally ill.
