How are nursing home residents exploited financially?

Anthony Cirillo
Geriatric Medicine

Financial or material exploitation is the illegal or improper use of funds, property or assets of a nursing home resident. It can be cashing a resident's checks without permission, forging a signature, stealing money or any other belonging, deceiving so that a resident may sign any document (contracts or will), and the improper use of guardianship, or power of attorney.

Others include: unexplained bank withdrawals; unauthorized use of a credit or ATM card; stolen or "misplaced" cards or checkbook; checks written as a "loan" or "gift"; abrupt changes in a will or other documents; unexplained transfer of assets to a family member or someone outside the family; disappearance of valuables; ill-advised investments; sudden appearance of a previously uninvolved relative claiming a right to an elder's affairs or possessions.
