Can regionalization affect the frequency of VATS to treat lung cancer?

Research has shown that, after regionalization—the shifting of care to designated centers within a certain system or region—minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) increases for people with lung cancer, with only a small minority still being performed via open technique. This means that more people could benefit from the known advantages of VATS. The increased use of VATS is especially noteworthy because people undergoing surgery via this minimally invasive technique may benefit from lower complication rates, less postoperative pain and higher quality of life compared to people who have open surgery.
