There are two epidemics in head and neck cancer: Thyroid cancer and HPV-associated throat cancer. In this video, Eric Genden, MD, chairman of the department of otolaryngology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, discusses the rise in diagnoses.

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma is the most common head and neck cancer in the United States. This tumor is located in the larynx (voice box), which is a tube-like structure in the neck at the top of the trachea (windpipe). The larynx contains the vocal folds (cords) and is important in breathing and talking. In laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas, the cancerous cells are a type of squamous cell; squamous cells are the cells that lining the inner surface of the mouth, throat, and larynx. Other relatively common head and neck cancers include squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue, tonsils, and other areas of the mouth.
