A cerebral contusion (a bruise on the brain) is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to structural brain damage caused by a blow to the head. About two percent of the U.S. population needs long-term or full-time care because of a TBI. Recovery from head injuries can be very slow and some individuals will have residual damage that will drastically change their lifestyle depending on the extent of the damage sustained.
