How can I increase my happiness by writing in a journal?

Every night, write down three things that went well that day and why. For instance, a dinner you made that was delicious, a productive office meeting that solved a heap of problems, or a heart-to-heart with your sister that was open, honest, and caring. It may also help to keep a gratitude list; this is where you list out the things for which you are truly grateful. They can be specific things like the time you spent that day with your mom, or general notes like being grateful for your children. You may find some overlap between these two lists, and that’s okay. The point is to focus on the positive—on the events, people, and experiences that you appreciate and that bring you joy.

This exercise may even inspire you to turn a negative into a positive just by reshaping your attitude. For example, let’s say you had a really bad day and an argument at work with a co-worker resulted in a reprimand from your boss. You have every right to be stressed and frustrated. What if you could turn that moment around by seeing its positive outcomes? What if you could see that it gave you an experience you needed to improve, to self-reflect, and to move forward? It may have been a hard lesson, but a lesson nonetheless. You can express gratitude for getting through that day, and look forward to the next one.
