What are the symptoms of pili torti?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Pili torti causes a flattening and twisting of the hair shaft. It appears twisted when viewed under a microscope. The hair will be brittle and break easily. Scalp hair will be different lengths and have a distinctive, wild appearance that shimmers in the light. The eyebrows and eyelashes can also be affected. More severe cases may leave people with stubble for hair. Some may have patches of baldness in areas that experience friction. The severity of the condition varies; children may be affected at birth, or symptoms may develop shortly after. The problem can spontaneously resolve during puberty. Pili torti has also been linked with dental or nail abnormalities.
