How can I apply topical medication for trichomycosis nodularis?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Trichomycosis nodularis can be treated with topical antifungal medication that kills the fungal infection causing black or white piedra. Antifungal medication can come in many forms, including creams, shampoos, ointments, or sprays. Although some antifungal medications are available over-the-counter, your doctor can help prescribe the best treatment for your specific strain of fungus. Your doctor may also recommend using a shampoo for piedra on the scalp, creams for piedra on the face or neck, ointments for piedra on the legs, or a thinner liquid for especially hairy areas. Topical antifungal treatment can last anywhere from four weeks to four months, depending on the severity of the piedra infection.
