How does viral infection affect premature ovarian failure (POF)?

Some viral infections (such as mumps or cytomegalovirus) may affect your ovaries and trigger premature ovarian failure. Also, certain viral infections in pregnant women can affect ovarian development in their female fetuses. Therefore, their daughters may be born with fewer viable eggs than usual, which can bring about POF.
