How are gynecologic biopsies done laparoscopically?

To do gynecologic biopsies laparoscopically, doctors typically make three or four small incisions, one in your belly button, one right above your pubic bone and two on the sides of your abdomen.

A hollow port about the size of a pen is then inserted through the abdomen so tools can be used inside the abdomen.Your belly will be filled with air so that your doctor can see your entire abdomen, and a bag may be inserted. Different types of biopsies can be placed into the bag and brought outside of the abdomen without anything ever spilling on the inside. That's important if a cancer is found.
