What are the treatment options for gout?

Your doctor will devise a treatment plan to help you manage your symptoms and prevent additional flare ups. As part of your treatment plan, your doctor may prescribe a pain reliever that also reduces inflammation, such as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen.

You may be prescribed a corticosteroid to take orally to reduce inflammation. In some cases, your doctor may treat your swollen joint with an injection of corticosteroid. You may have to limit the amount of high-purine foods and alcohol in your diet, too. In severe cases, a daily medication like colchicine can be taken to help manage chronic symptoms, lower uric acid levels, and prevent the buildup of uric crystals in the joints, skin, and organs. Lifestyle changes like weight loss and increasing nonalcoholic beverages may be recommended as well.
