What causes gestational trophoblastic tumors?

Gestational trophoblastic tumors are usually caused by an abnormality in the process of egg fertilization during the conception of a baby. In some instances, the abnormality is caused by one egg being fertilized by two sperm, resulting in the embryo having an extra set of genetic material. In other instances, the abnormality is caused by one or two sperm fertilizing an abnormal egg that has no nucleus, and thus no genetic material. This causes the fertilization product to have genetic material from only the father. Choriocarcinoma, a type of gestational trophoblastic tumor, may also arise from pieces of material left in the uterus (womb) after a therapeutic abortion, miscarriage, or normal delivery of a baby.
