How is a stage IV germ cell tumor treated?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

A stage IV germ cell tumor has spread beyond the abdominal cavity. Treatment of a stage IV dysgerminoma (most common germ cell tumor type) is similar to that for stage III disease. The doctor will likely perform surgery to remove one or both ovaries, and then you may have to undergo chemotherapy. Treatment of other stage IV germ cell tumors also involves surgery with or without chemotherapy. In the treatment of non-dysgerminomas, chemotherapy may be administered prior to or after surgery.
