What prescription medications can help acid reflux?

The proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most potent acid-blocking medications available on the market. Most, but not all, are prescription drugs. Examples of prescription forms of PPIs include Nexium (esomeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole), Acifex (rebeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole). Prilosec (omeprazole), Zegrid (ompeprazole and bicarbonate) and lansoprazole are now also available over-the-counter. If you have erosive esophagitis, some of these medications may be better than others. If you have symptoms of GERD, these medicines should be relatively equal for treating the condition. Additionally, histamine 2 or H2 blockers can be precribed for your condition. These include cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid). These medications are also available over-the counter.
