Medications for achalasia such as nitrates or Ca channel blockers may be used for temporary relief from achalasia, especially while the patient is waiting for surgical treatment. Botulinum toxin (Botox) injected into the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) under endoscopic guidance can be used to temporarily relax the muscle, but the procedure must be repeated periodically.
