Why did the doctor prescribe Renvela for my father with kidney disease?

Renvela (also known as sevelamer) is a medicine used to help prevent the buildup of a mineral called phosphorus in the blood of people, like your father, who have kidney disease. Phosphorus comes from foods in the diet, and healthy kidneys remove excess phosphorus from the blood. But, because your father's kidneys no longer work properly, dialysis treatment and a low-phosphorus diet are used to reduce high levels of phosphorus. Renvela can also help reduce the excess phosphorus by binding to the phosphorous and preventing it from being absorbed into his blood.
