What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol (a natural antioxidant) found in the skin and seeds of grapes used to make wine. Health benefits of red wine are related to one of its nonalcoholic components, called resveratrol. The alcohol merely serves as a vehicle for which to get the antioxidant. However, you don't have to be a wine drinker to reap the benefits of resveratrol -- this polyphenol is also found in a variety of fruits, vegetables and even tea. It's especially prevalent in raspberries, peanuts and other plants.

Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant found in grape juice and wine that very likely decreases heart disease. Studies have shown it to prevent blood vessel damage, reduce "bad" cholesterol and prevent blood clots. It's concentrated in the seeds and skins of grapes. That's why it's found in higher amounts in red wine than in white, because red wine is fermented with the skins. There is twice as much resveratrol in wine than in grape juice because of the fermentation. Mulberries, raspberries and peanuts contain it in lesser amounts. Plants produce resveratrol to protect themselves from fungus—the unbelievable power of nature! In a study, mice fed with it had longer life spans.

Resveratrol is a compound that is found in nature in plants such as the Japanese knotweed, blueberries, peanuts, red grape skins, and others. When it is consumed in the plant form, or as a supplement, its properties help prevent the damaging effects of aging. Resveratrol is also found in red wine. The supplements are made of the extracts of the plants that contain it. The supplement can be found over-the-counter in pill form, liquid form, or worn as a patch.
