What is Renvela?

Renvela (sevelamer) is a medicine used to help prevent the buildup of a mineral called phosphorus in the blood of people with kidney disease who are on dialysis. Phosphorus comes from foods in the diet, and healthy kidneys remove excess phosphorus from the blood. But when the kidneys don’t work properly, as in people with kidney disease, dialysis treatment and a low-phosphorus diet are used to reduce high levels of phosphorus. Renvela can also help reduce the excess phosphorus by binding to the dietary phosphorous and preventing it from being absorbed into the blood.
