What is PhosLo?

PhosLo is also known as calcium acetate. It is an oral medication used by individuals in end stage renal failure. It is also used to treat renal osteodystrophy, a bone disease that is a complication of renal failure, and pseudoparathyroidism. Since the kidneys are not effectively filtering the blood in end stage renal failure, there are excess amounts of phosphate left in the blood, which affects the bones and soft tissues in your body. PhosLo works to remove excess amounts of phosphate in your body that dialysis does not remove. PhosLo can reduce your risk of complications from too much phosphate, such as heart disease or stroke.
