What are the side effects of DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide)?

If you are allergic to DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), you may have difficulty breathing, hives or rash, or swelling of the throat and mouth. These reactions require immediate medical attention. Some people may have pain or discomfort during the insertion part of the procedure and while holding the solution in the bladder. The discomfort usually fades with additional treatments. Many people report a taste of onion or garlic after treatment with DMSO, or smell onion or garlic on their skin for several days. This is a normal, unharmful  side effect.
