What is citric acid, glucono-delta-lactone, and magnesium carbonate?

Citric acid, glucono-delta-lactone and magnesium carbonate is a combination product known by the brand name Renacidin Irrigation. This sterile, non-pyrogenic irrigation solution is used in the urinary tract to dissolve kidney stones. This particular solution will dissolve apatite calculi (calcium carbonate-phosphate compound stones) and struvite calculi (magnesium ammonium phosphate stones) but will not dissolve calculi (stones) formed of calcium oxalate, uric acid or cysteine. Since problems can arise from irrigation of this solution through a renal catheter, this procedure is only for those individuals that are not candidates for surgery. Magnesium in the solution exchanges for calcium in the stone and helps to dissolve it.
