What causes urinary system cancers?

The causes of urinary system cancers cannot always be determined. It is not always clear why the cells in the urinary system begin to mutate and become cancerous. Researchers believe that smoking causes some cases of urinary system cancers, perhaps because chemicals that are inhaled with tobacco smoke are absorbed by the blood and filtered by and excreted through the urinary tract. Exposure to certain other types of harmful chemicals is also thought to cause urinary system cancers. Some urinary system cancers, particularly kidney cancer that appears during childhood, can be caused by birth defects and genetic disorders inherited from one or both parents.
