What are mixed acid-base disorders?

Mixed or complex acid-base disorders arise from imbalances in more than one type of molecule in the blood. These are commonly caused by metabolic acidosis or alkalosis.
In recent years, scientists have come up with new ways to analyze and measure the different chemicals in the blood.  One method, called the physical chemical or quantitative acid-base approach, is helping doctors find the specific causes behind different acid-base disorders.
