Can acid-base metabolism disorders be prevented?

Managing any underlying disease, such as diabetes, may help prevent metabolic acidosis from occurring. Taking care of your general health, especially your kidneys, may help prevent other types of acid-base metabolism disorders.  If you are diabetic, be sure to monitor your blood sugar on a daily basis, and more often if you are under stress or feeling ill. Talk with your doctor about how to adjust your eating schedules and your medications to control your blood sugar. You may also wish to test your urine for levels of ketones, especially if you are under stress or feeling ill, with a urine test kit available through your pharmacy.
