What are the mitochondria that cause mitochondrial disease?

The mitochondria are commonly considered to be the energy producer of the cell. The mitochondria convert oxygen and food into energy that the cell needs to deliver to the body. When the mitochondria do not do their job of energy-conversion correctly due to damage or a defect, the energy level that the cell is able to deliver to the body is compromised. When mitochondria throughout the body are damaged or defective, then entire organs or body systems are seriously impacted.
