What causes fragile X syndrome (FXS)?

Fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited cause of mental retardation is causes by a fragile site on the X chromosome which causes it to gives rise to extra repeats of a DNA sequence, CGG.

Fragile X syndrome is an inherited disease. All people inherit genes from their parents; one of each pair comes from their mother, and one comes from their father. The changed gene that causes fragile X syndrome is passed along from a parent to a child.
If you have fragile X syndrome, you are likely to have family members with the condition. However, people may have fragile X syndrome even if their parents do not show any symptoms of it, as their parents may simply be carriers.
