What is the HCG Diet?

The HCG diet has been marketed since the 1950's. This diet, utilizing HCG drops and injections, has been touted as a "cutting edge" method to lose weight. The HCG is used in combination with a 500 to 800 daily calorie intake. Controlled studies have shown that if a client loses weight using this diet plan, the weight loss comes from the calorie restriction and not the HCG. Since 1975, the FDA has required all HCG marketing materials to state that "HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy in the treatment of obesity. There is no substantial evidence that it increases weight loss beyond that resulting from calorie restriction".

The proposed calorie restriction of 500 to 800 calories a day is not safe, and will not support healthy brain and bodily functions. The only healthy and safe method to acheive long term weight loss is a medically sound exercise and eating plan. Less calories in, more calories out. There is no secret "magic bullet".
