Are low-fat foods healthy?

Rose Reisman
Nutrition & Dietetics
Low-fat foods seem healthier for us, but the manufacturers don’t want to risk losing flavor. So to compensate for less fat, excess sugar is added to retain moisture, which adds to the calories. Over time this can lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The daily requirement for sugar is about 40 grams or 10 teaspoons, which is not much considering the amount of sugar hidden in low-fat foods.

Read food labels for high-fructose corn syrup, which is more economical but sweeter and worse for you than sugar. It’s used in many processed low-fat sweet foods and beverages

Try to minimize these foods, which have excess sugar:
  • low-fat ice cream
  • low-fat salad dressings
  • low-fat cereals
  • low-fat desserts and low-fat yogurt, where 1 cup can have your daily allowance of 10 teaspoons of sugar
Low-fat is not always what it’s made out to be!
