What is anal atresia?

Anal atresia is a birth defect that is also called imperforate anus. As the name suggests, it is a defect in which there is a problem with the development of the anus, the opening at the end of the intestine. At times, this opening does not develop, or a thin covering blocks the opening. In other situations, the anus connects to a different part of the body rather than the end of the intestine, such as the urethra, vagina, or bladder. This can lead to bowel obstructions and other complications.
